Homeopathy medicines and H1N1 – a rational approach needed

Empower & Inspire: Spread Health & Wellness

H1N1 numbers are increasing in India, and a new picture is emerging of its spread. The cumulative laboratory confirmed deaths reported by the Indian Govt as on 26th August 2009 is 75.

CDC identified H1N1 in mid april this year, and WHO declared H1N1 pandemic in June. As the numbers about reported cases and mortality are rising in India, PANIC about H1N1 is soaring high.

This month we have seen mass circulation of sms about influenzinum homeopathic medicine as preventive for H1N1. It is correctly mentioned by some international newspapers that in India swine flu panic is spreading faster than virus.

Is influenzinum right homeopathic remedy for H1N1 flu in India? No Govt. official statement is released, and there is no correction regarding hysterical usage of influenzinum.

Promotion of homeopathy this way has raised an alarm in other countries. Amidst this promotion and confusion, we find a report by BBC on Thursday, 20_August 2009 — Homeopathy not a cure, says WHO.

Dr Robert Hagan is a researcher in biomolecular science at the University of St Andrews and a member of Voice of Young Science Network, which is part of the charity Sense About Science campaigning for “evidence-based” care. He said: “We need governments around the world to recognise the dangers of promoting homeopathy for life-threatening illnesses.”

However Paula Ross, chief executive of the Society of Homeopaths, said it was right to raise concerns about promotion of homeopathy as a cure for TB, malaria or HIV and Aids. But she added: “This is just another poorly wrapped attempt to discredit homeopathy by Sense About Science.

Dr Sara Eames, president of the faculty, said people should not be deprived of effective conventional medicines for serious disease. Millions die each year as those affected have no access to these drugs. It therefore seems reasonable to consider what beneficial role homeopathy could play. What is needed is further research and investment into homeopathy.”

In the first week of August, first death alerted people, and in the state of fear and panic, people promoted some homeopathic medicines for H1N1 prevention. And with SMS havoc, people wanted to know more about role of homeopathy in H1N1 treatment.

Regarding exploring the scope of homeopathy, homeopathic medicines in H1N1 virus prevention and treatment, Dr. Anil Singhal, MD (Homeo) suggested that the proper guidelines should be established related to:

– prevention (a genus epidemicus with symptoms from H1N1 patients)
– prevention with nosode (prepare H1N1 influenzinum)
– post influenza treatment (follow-ups to note any effects, and to prevent any chronicity as per miasm theory), and other similar aspects.

“With these my views on H1N1, I believe, we all can work together to make this world H1N1 free”, says Dr. Anil Singhal, MD (Homeo), Visiting Faculty, Nehru Homoeopathic Medical College & Hospital, New Delhi, Dr. B. R. Sur Homoeopathic Medical College & Hospital, New Delhi, and Bakson Homoeopathic Medical College & Hospital, Greater Noida.
