World now at the start of 2009 influenza pandemic, says WHO. – On the basis of available evidence and expert assessments of the evidence, the scientific criteria for an influenza pandemic have been met. The Director-General of WHO has therefore decided to raise the level of influenza pandemic alert from phase 5 to phase 6.

H1N1 update as on 8th June 2009 – 25,288 laboratory confirmed cases of influenza A/H1N1 infection from 73 countries. – The 60 year old mother of the positive case [reported at Delhi on 7.6.2009] complained of mild symptoms and also tested positive. She got the infection from her son. They are on oseltamivir. All their contacts have been put on chemoprophylaxis.
